SEO for small business

SEO for small business

Does SEO for small business even work?

Nearly every business owner I talk to, one of the first things they say when it comes to building their website is that they need SEO. Then I ask them, ‘why do you need SEO’ they reply with, ‘well it so I come up on Google’. Then I give them a similar scenario;

“Imagine your website is ranking high for a competitive keyword, your website is getting high traffic and your phone is ringing off the hook!”

Then I asked them could your business handle the workload? They would normally answer, “probably not, but it would be nice problem to have, as the business expands and employee more people”.

So, what is SEO?

This term is used too loosely these days, and business owners hear these buzz words and they think they need that. The real fact about SEO (search engine optimisation) is that once you start you’re silly to stop it. Unless you’re ok with your listing rank slipping down the page on SERP (search engine result pages).

Take a look at the meaning behind SEO (below is a straight cut and paste, first paragraph from Wikipedia)

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results—often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a website appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users; these visitors can then be converted into customers.[1] SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, video search, academic search,[2] news search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. SEO differs from local search engine optimisation in that the latter is focused on optimising a business’ online presence so that its web pages will be displayed by search engines when a user enters a local search for its products or services. The former instead is more focused on national or international searches.

So, there you have it, sounds easy, yeah right!

So where do you begin? And being a small business owner, you no doubt don’t have time to learn then implement. However, you could start by learning how search engines work and how they interact with your website and how this influence where your web page ends up on SERP then keep up with the likes of Google (who are famous for changing their algorithm). Sounds like a lot of time. Any Google expert or SEO professional will be consistently learning – here is a history of Google’s major updates, Google: Algorithm Updates

Every website should have a SEO area or key phrase tag area within the walls of the website CMS, also not to mention the time it would take for you to up-skill your SEO knowledge and then time implement and continue the process every month (bear in mind the online industry is forever evolving, not to mention the several algorithm updates that Google does on a weekly, monthly, yearly basis.

Back to my opening question – the answer is YES, SEO for small business will certainly help your business. This statement is no sales ploy, it’s purely how it is. So, to get on top on your rankings, do you think SEO will help your business?
